Naples (from the Greek «NeaPolis» - a new city) is the largest city in southern Italy, situated on the picturesque coast of the Gulf of Naples, at foot of the active volcano Mount Vesuvius.

The city was founded by the Greeks in the VIII B.C. It was a part of the mighty Roman Empire, then — the capital of the Kingdom of Naplesa and the wealthy Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. In the XVII century Naples had 300 thousand inhabitants and was the second largest city in Europe after Paris. Since 1860 the city became the capital of the Campania region, which became part of the state Italy.

Naples today is a primarily city of arts, the real treasury of art and architectural works. The main attractions are the National Museum of Capodimonte, the National Archaeological Museum that holds a unique collection of exhibits telling about the life of the ancient Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum, destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, the San Carlo opera house, the Royal Palace (Palazzo Reale) - main residence of the monarchs of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, Cathedral of St. Januarius, dedicated to the heavenly patron of the city St. Januarius, the Castel Nuovo — the castle built by King Charles of Anjou on the shore, the Egg Castle (Castel dell'Ovo) - a medieval fortress on an island in the Tyrrhenian Sea, coupled with Naples by narrow bulk, and many others.

Naples is one of the most important ports of the Mediterranean Sea, from which daily ferries depart to the nearby world-famous island of Capri and Ischia and ships arrive from other countries and continents.

Naples is the birthplace of the famous Neapolitan pizza, which fragrant soars among the narrow medieval streets, mixing with a characteristic smell of the sea.

Naples is the city of cheerful people with rousing songs and lighthearted humor.

All these features make the city of Naples one of the favourite destinations of foreign tourists, who often repeat the famous Neapolitan phrase «Vide Napule e po 'muore» - See Naples and die, which means that everybody need to see at least once in the life the beauty and the splendor of Naples.
